TExES Social Studies 7-12 Video Overviews

Mometrix has provided a free one-hour-and-forty-minute video study guide in which the presenter walks you through a summary of the test material and fills out notes on a whiteboard. This is similar to a lecture style review.

Finding the right study guide for you can be tricky. 240 Tutoring provides a brief guide on the types of resources available to choose from when studying for your exams.

First Thing to Know

The TExES Social Studies 7-12 (232) is part of the TExES series of tests. TExES stands for Texas Examinations of Educator Standards. The TExES exams are designed to test beginning educators and determine whether or not they have the sufficient knowledge to teach entry level courses in specific content areas and grade levels. TExES exams mirror the content for grade levels identified by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

The TExES Social Studies 7-12 will determine whether or not a candidate has the knowledge to teach social studies courses in grades 7-12.

The identification number for the TExES Social Studies 7-12 is 232. Each test has its own identification number used to differentiate it from other TExES exams (the Social Studies 4-8 exam, for example, is test code 118). These numbers help with record-keeping purposes and can help you make sure that you are taking the right exam.

TExES Social Studies 7-12 Exam Breakdown

The TExES Social Studies 7-12 covers topics from seven domains. Each domain is further broken down into individual competencies that may appear on the exam. You can review the specific competencies from each domain here.

Domain Title Percentage of Exam
World History 15%
US History 20%
Texas History 13%
Geography, Culture, and the Behavioral and Social Sciences 13%
Government and Citizenship 13%
Economics and Science, Technology, and Society 13%
Social Studies Foundations, Skills, Research, and Instruction 13%

You will have five hours to complete 140 questions. Many of these questions will be traditional multiple-choice, but some may require you to interact with an image, choose all that apply, or drag answer choices into the correct target area.

You must pass the entire exam as a whole; it is not broken down into subtests to be taken individually.

What is a Passing Score

TExES exams have a scaled score between 100 and 300. Scaled scores allow the testing company to make adjustments for questions that may still be in development or are not included in the score for other reasons. In order to pass the TExES Social Studies 4-8, you need to score a 240 or higher.
