First Thing to Know
TExES stands for Texas Examination of Educator Standards. As you might have guessed from the name, it is the exam series required for certification in the state of Texas. There are different TExES content tests for different subject areas.
The TExES Science 7-12 exam is used to determine whether the test-taker has the prerequisite knowledge and skills to be an entry-level science teacher in Texas public schools.
Each TExES content test has a specific test number. The number for the TExES Science 7-12 is 236. You might see study guides refer to the full written name of the exam or just the test number.
TExES Science 7-12 Exam Breakdown
The TExES Science 7-12 is made up of 10 domains. This means you must pass each individual domain to pass the entire TExES Science 7-12 (236) exam. You will have five hours to complete 140 multiple-choice questions. The different test domains are listed below.

The TExES Science 7-12 does not contain subtests, so you will need to take the entire test during each test attempt.
What is a Passing Score
TExES exams are scored from 100 to 300, and you need to get at least 240 to pass. TExES scores are scaled, which means that your raw score (the number of questions answered correctly) will be adjusted to account for differences between test forms.
How to Register for the TExES Science 7-12 Exam
New to Teaching?
New teachers in the state of Texas will need approval from an Educator Preparation Program before signing up for the test. This means that in order to register for and take the TExES Science 7-12 exam, you must first complete a certification program.
Enrolling in a certification program can be a complicated process, but don’t be discouraged! Do some research and try to talk to a representative of the program by phone or in person. You want to find a program that is a good fit for you and your situation.

- Create an account by clicking on the “My Account” link.
- Once you’re logged in, click the “Register” link that is near the top of the page.
- Now click on the “AAFCS, TASC, TExES” tab near the center of the page.
- Click the orange “Register Now” button. If you’re not already logged in, this page will also prompt you to enter your email address and password.
The online system will ask a series of questions to determine your testing needs. Here you will be able to select the Science 7-12 (236) exam from a list. Note that you must complete the registration and payment before you can schedule a test date and location. After you register and submit payment, you can schedule your test at any time within 170 days by logging back into your account.
