The TExES, or Texas Examination of Educator Standards, is the series of educator certification exams in Texas. These exams are used to assess the skills necessary for educators in Texas.

The TExES Principal as Instructional Leader (268) exam is used to assess the knowledge and skills of principal candidates in the state of Texas.  Because instructional leadership is one of the most important skills of effective principals, the exam includes the following content: data-driven decision making, change management, continuous improvement cycle, coaching cycle, and issues related to equitable education.

The identification number for the TExES Principal as Instructional Leader exam is 268. All exams in the TExES series have a number associated with the name. This number is used by test administrators and agencies when referring to the exam.

Principal as Instructional Leader Exam Breakdown

The TExES Principal as Instructional Leader (268) exam is made up of six domains containing eleven competency areas. The exam is a computer-administered test with 70 selected-response, or multiple choice questions, and four constructed-response questions. You will have 5 hours to complete the exam unless you qualify for accommodations.

You will need to complete the entire test in one sitting unless you qualify for accommodations. If you do not pass, you will need to retake the entire test. If you need to retake the test, you can do so 30 days after your most recent attempt.

What is a Passing Score

A passing score for the TExES Principal as Instructional Leader (268) exam is a scaled score of 240.  You can use this information to determine when your score will be available to you.

How to Register for Principal as Instructional Leader Exam

  1. Go to the Texas Educator Certification Examination Program webpage.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and you should see a “Register Now” box. Click this box.
  3. You will have the option to “create an account now”. Click this.
  4. Enter the necessary information to create a log in.
  5. Enter the “Required Candidate Information”.
  6. Review “Required Candidate Information”.
  7. Review your personal information and make sure everything is correct. Your name will need to match the name on the ID you plan to use at the testing center.
  8. Now that you are logged in, you can register for an exam. Click “Exams” at the top.
  9. Scroll down to TExES and click the dropdown menu.
  10. Find Principal as Instructional Leader (268)
  11. Click “Register Now”.
  12. Confirm your identity and click next.
  13. Select the exam from the dropdown menu and click “add”. Click next.
  14. If you require alternative testing arrangements, you will do so now.
  15. Answer the background questions.
  16. Select your score reporting option.
  17. Review your registration, add to cart, and pay for your exam.
  18. If provided with the option to print your confirmation, you should print it just in case.

Arrive at the testing center on the day you selected! Once you pass this exam and the PASL, you will be certified as a principal. Congrats!
