First Thing to Know

This is a test from the series of TExES exams required by the state of Texas for prospective teachers. “TExES” is an acronym used to represent the longer name, “Texas Examination of Educator Standards.”

The TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 exam is required along with a content certification for all classroom teachers from early childhood through 12th grade. The questions may reference specific grades, but they are designed to be answerable by teachers of all levels who have a strong understanding of pedagogy and professional responsibilities.

You may have noticed the number included at the end of the test name. The identification number for the PPR is 160. All TExES tests have an assigned number. These arbitrary numbers exist as a simplified way to reference the tests. Simply put, there are a bunch of different certification exams, and it’s easier to reference them by a number than by their longer, (and sometimes confusing) titles.

TExES PPR Exam Breakdown

The TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC–12 (160), or PPR, exam is made up of 100 multiple-choice questions from four different domains and contains no subtests. This means that all of the topics will be mixed together, and you will not have to worry about meeting specific expectations on individual domains. You just need to get an overall passing score.

You will have four hours and 45 minutes to complete this exam and will be able to work on or revisit any of the test questions during that time.

What is a Passing Score

You will need a score of 240 out of 300 in order to pass this exam. This is a scaled score, not a percentage score. This means that each administration of the test will vary some in the difficulty of questions and in the distribution of questions among the various domains. Every test will also contain some questions that do not count toward your score. These variations are taken into account when determining the passing standard for each administration. Generally speaking, you can expect to pass the exam as long as you answer at least 70% of the questions correctly.

How to Register for the TExES PPR Exam

Teachers in the state of Texas will need approval from an Educator Preparation Program in order to sign up for the test. This means that in order to take the PPR exam, you must first enroll in a certification program.

This part of the process can be a bit complicated, but don’t be discouraged! Do your research and try to talk to a representative of the program on the phone or in person. Find a program that is a good fit for you and your situation.

Once you have approval from your certification program, signing up for the test is a piece of cake! Just follow these quick steps:

Visit the Texas Educator Certification Examination Program website.
Create an account. If you click on the “Sign In” link, you will see an option to create an account.
Once you’re logged in, click the “Register” link that is near the top of the page.
Now click on the “AAFCS, TASC, TExES” tab near the center of the page.
Click the orange “Register Now” button. If you’re not already logged in, this page will also prompt you to enter your email address and password.

The system will now take you through a series of questions in order to determine your testing needs. Among those questions will be an opportunity to select the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 exam from a list of your approved exams. Note that you will not be able to schedule your test date and location until after you have paid for the test.
