“TExES” is an acronym for the Texas Examination of Educator Standards series of tests. These are the tests that a prospective teacher must pass before becoming certified as a classroom teacher in the state of Texas.

This specific test, the Mathematics 7-12 exam, is the required test for teachers who will teach a math class in grades 7-12. This test incorporates content that covers the various different math classes that fall into that range of grades, like Geometry and Algebra. Teachers who plan to teach lower grades will take a different test.

The identification number for the TExES Mathematics 7-12 is 235. Each of the TExES exams are given a specific number. These numbers provide a way for the state to keep all the different tests organized without always having to refer to them by their longer names. It’s just easier to reference test 235 instead of TExES Mathematics 7-12. You will typically see both included on test information — TExES Mathematics 7-12 (235) — just like the title of this page.

TExES Mathematics 7-12 Exam Breakdown

The TExES Mathematics 7-12 exam is made up of 100 questions that are divided among six domains, with five hours allotted to complete the exam.

While the test covers six domains, the questions will all be mixed together in one test with no subtests. Your score will be calculated without discriminating between the different domains. This means that weakness in one domain could technically be compensated for by doing exceptionally well on questions in a different domain. Despite this, we highly recommend you identify your weaker domains and allocate extra study time in those areas.

What is a Passing Score

A passing score for the Mathematics 7-12 test is 240 out of a possible 300 points.

I know what you’re thinking: that number seems random. It may seem random at first glance, but it is actually a scaled score based on a complex rubric. Each test will contain some questions that do not count and some questions that are harder or easier than those on other administrations of the exam. While these factors make it impossible for us to predict exactly how many questions you must answer correctly in order to pass, you can generally expect to receive a passing score if you answer at least 70% of them correctly.

How to Register for the TExES Mathematics 7-12 Exam

You will need approval from an Educator Preparation Program in Texas in order to register for the TExES Mathematics 7-12 exam. If you are not already enrolled in a certification program, you will need to apply to one. Once you have approval from a certification program, registering for the test will be a piece of cake! Follow these simple steps:

Visit the Texas Educator Certification Examination website and create a login.
Select the “Register” link near the top of the page.
Click on the “AAFCS, TASC, TExES” tab that is in the middle of the page.
Click on the orange “Register Now” button.

From here, you will be taken through a series of questions in order to clarify your testing needs. One of the pages in the series will provide a drop-down menu from which you can select TExES Mathematics 7-12 (235). Note that you will not be able to choose your administration date and location until after you have paid for your test.

Already Certified?

If you are already a certified teacher and looking to become certified in this as a new subject, you will register for your test on the Texas Educator Certification Examination website. In order to create an account on this website you will need your TEA ID number. If you do not know your number, you can access it by logging into TEAL on the TEA website.

Once you have an account, follow these quick steps:

Select the “Register” link near the top of the page.
Click on the “AAFCS, TASC, TExES” tab that is in the middle of the page.
Click on the orange “Register Now” button.

From there, you will be taken through a series of questions that clarify your testing needs. One of the pages in the series will provide a drop-down menu from which to select your desired test. There will likely be many tests on that list, so be careful to choose the right one, TExES Mathematics 7-12 (235). Note that you will not be able to choose your administration date and location until after you have paid for your test. You can, however, view available testing locations and dates prior to purchasing.
