First Thing to Know

Praxis® exams are a series of tests used by various states to determine teacher qualifications. The term “Praxis®” means to demonstrate theoretical knowledge in practice, meaning these tests provide a chance for you, the prospective teacher, to show that you know have learned all the necessary skills to begin teaching a certain subject.

This particular test, the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects, is meant for people hoping to teach Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Language Arts at the elementary school level.

But what about that “5001” number? The identification number for the Multiple Subjects exam is 5001, and its only purpose is to help the state and test administrators better identify this test among all the other different tests. It is much easier to refer to a test by a four-digit number than to constantly use the full descriptive title.

Praxis® Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects Exam Breakdown

The Multiple Subjects test is made up of four subtests. This means you must pass each individual subtest to pass the entire Praxis® Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5001) exam.

Subtest and Test Code Approximate Number of Questions Time Limit
Reading and Language Arts (5002) 80 90 minutes
Mathematics (5003) 50 65 minutes
Social Studies (5004) 60 60 minutes
Science (5005) 55 60 minutes

Each of the subtests can be taken as a stand-alone exam. To take all four at once, you will register for this Multiple Subjects exam, but if you only need to retake one, two, or three of the subtests, they can be registered for individually.

What is a Passing Score

The Praxis® exams are graded using scaled scores. When you receive your score, it will not be a traditional percentage but a number between 100 and 200. This allows test makers to adjust scoring of each test administration to best reflect question variations from test to test.

There is not one set passing score for this exam. As this test is used across many states, each state has the freedom to determine its own passing standard. Visit the Praxis® State Requirements page to determine your state’s passing standard.

How to Register for the Praxis® Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects Exam

New to Teaching?

If you are new to teaching, you will need to participate in a certification program before registering for a Praxis® exam. Each state is able to create their own certification process. Since the Praxis® is used in many different states, you will need to find your specific state’s requirements.

A good starting point is the Praxis® State Requirements page. From there, you can click on your state’s link. This state-specific page provides different helpful links, usually including resources on how to begin the certification process.

Once you have approval from a certification program, you will register using the ETS Praxis® registration page.

  1. Select the blue “Create Account” link near the center of the page.
  2. Fill in your information. Note that your Social Security number is not specifically required by the ETS page, but it is required by some states. If you choose to leave it off and later find out your state requires it, it could make it difficult to register for your test.
  3. Once you are logged in, you will be directed to a home page that provides relevant links. In the upper left-hand corner, select “Register for a Praxis® Test.”
  4. Next complete (if you choose to) the optional information regarding your experience and education. While the questions are not all required by the ETS website, they may be required by your state.
  5. You’re almost done! Now, use the drop-down lists to select your state and agency, working through the remaining prompts to select your test administration, choose your score recipients, and pay for your test.
  6. Be sure to print out your test ticket. It may not be required by your testing site, but it would be best to have it just in case.

Already Certified?

Registering for your test will be quick and easy!

  1. Log in to your ETS account. If you have forgotten your password, the “forgot username” and “forgot password” links will help you retrieve your login information.
  1. Once you are logged in, you will be directed to a home page that provides relevant links. In the upper left-hand corner, select “Register for a Praxis® Test.”
  1. Review, updating if needed, all of your personal information and background questions.
  1. You’re almost done! Now, use the drop-down lists to select your state and agency, working through the remaining prompts to select your test administration, choose your score recipients, and pay for your test.

*Remember to print your test ticket! It may not be required by your testing site, but it would be best to have it just in case.

That’s it! Now you will arrive to take your test on your selected day. Assuming you have met all of your state’s specific requirements, once you pass the exam, you’ll be qualified to teach elementary level science, social studies, mathematics, and English!

Yay!

The Praxis® Study Companion

The ETS website offers practice questions inside of its study companion for the Elementary Education Multiple Subjects Exam. The reliability of this resource is undeniable, as the questions are provided by the same company that is responsible for the actual test. While reliable, however, it will likely not fulfill all of your study needs. ETS provides between 10 and 20 questions for each of the subtests. Given that these subtests will actually contain between 50 and 80 questions apiece, this practice test can only offer a partial understanding of your preparedness.

Teachers Test Prep

This resource offers one free practice test for each of the subtests, with further paid resources and additional paid practice tests available. You are required to create an account before accessing the practice test. A particular strength of this resource is the large number of questions provided. For example, the free practice reading subtest provides 80 questions. Following your practice test, you receive a breakdown of your results. Teachers Test Prep offers resources like detailed explanations and videos related to your errors, but they are only available if you purchase the full program.

While the sheer number of questions can be expected to cover many relevant skills, you may find some of the questions to be oddly phrased or framed in an unusual way.
