First Thing to Know

The Praxis® exams assess the qualifications of educators. Praxis means application of knowledge in any branch of learning. These exams give you the opportunity to show mastery of the necessary skills and strategies to teach a specific subject or grade level.

Praxis® Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12 (5624), assesses the understanding and application of foundational educational practices. This test will focus on the necessary practices for educators interested in teaching grades 7-12.

What does “5624” mean? Each Praxis® exam has an identification number. The Praxis® Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12 is 5624. The number helps the states and administrators identify this test. It is easier to refer to the exams by the four-digit number than by the lengthy name of the exam.

States are responsible for setting their own passing scores. You can find more information about your state’s passing score here.

How to Register for Praxis® Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12 Exam

New to Teaching?

If you are new to the world of education, you must complete a teacher certification program before you register for any tests. All states have different processes and requirements for becoming a certified teacher. A good starting point is the Praxis® State Requirements page. Here, you can find the link for your state and view specific resources which will help you start the process.

Once you have completed a certification program and have approval from that program, you can register for your exam using the ETS Praxis® Registration Page.

  1. Click the blue “Create Account” button located in the “New User” box.
  2. Enter your information. Be sure you use the same name on the primary identification document that you will present at the testing center. ETS will not require your Social Security number, but some states will. If you do not provide it and later find out your state requires it, you might have delays in the processing of your application.
  3. After logging in, you will be directed to a home page with several links. On the left-hand side under “Registrations and Orders,” you will see “Register for a Praxis® Test.” Click this link.
  4. The following page contains several optional questions about your experience and education. Though not required by ETS, they may be required by your state.
  5. You are almost done registering! Next, you will use the drop-down menus to select your state and agency.
  6. Complete your registration by selecting PLT: Grades 7-12 and your score recipients and paying for your test.
  7. Print your test ticket. Although it might not be required at the testing location, it is best to have it just in case.

Already Certified?

If you are already certified and have taken Praxis exams before, this should be a quick and easy process!

  1. Use the Praxis® Registration Page to log in. If you have forgotten your log-in information, use the “Forgot User Name” or “Forgot Password” link to recover your information.
  2. After you log in, you will be directed to a home page with several links. Under “Registrations and Orders” there should be a link to “Register for a Praxis® Test.” Click this link.
  3. Review your personal information and background questions. Make any needed changes.
  4. You are almost done! You will use the drop-down menus to select your state and agency.
  5. Complete registration by selecting PLT: Grades 7-12 and your score recipients and paying for your test.
  6. Print your test ticket. Although it might not be required at your testing location, it is best to have it just in case.

You have successfully registered for your exam. Yay!

The ETS Praxis® Study Companion

The ETS website provides a study companion for each test. Within the study companion for the Praxis® Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12 (5624) exam, there are practice questions. The same company responsible for the test itself provides these practice questions, so it is a very reliable resource. However, the study companion includes only 19 sample questions, 17 of which are multiple-choice and two of which are constructed-response. The actual exam includes close to 70 questions, so even though the content is comparable, this resource can only offer a glimpse into understanding how prepared you are.
