First Thing to Know

Praxis® exams are a series of teacher certification tests used by several different states. These tests provide a chance for you, the prospective teacher, to demonstrate that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to begin teaching a certain subject.

This particular exam, the Praxis® Physical Education: Content and Design, evaluates your knowledge of content specifically related to physical education. Several states require that you pass this exam before teaching physical education in grades K-12.

The identification number for the Praxis® Physical Education: Content and Design is 5095. This number is mainly used for registration and record-keeping purposes. It’s also helpful for you, the test taker, to be familiar with this number so that you can make sure you are registering for the right exam and studying the right material.

Praxis® Physical Education: Content and Design Exam Breakdown

The Praxis® Physical Education: Content and Design is a computer-based test (CBT) with 90 multiple-choice questions and two constructed-response questions. You will have two hours to complete the exam. The exam is broken down into five content categories, as shown in the table below. There are no subtests, which means you will need to retake the entire exam if you don’t pass.

Content Category Approximate Number of Questions Approximate Percentage of Exam
  1. Content Knowledge and Student Growth and Development
27 multiple-choice 23%
  1. Management, Motivation, and Communication
23 multiple-choice 19%
  1. Planning, Instruction, and Student Assessment

The biggest difference between these two exams is that the Praxis® Physical Education: Content and Design (5095) includes a fifth content category (Instructional Design) consisting of two constructed-response questions.

What is a Passing Score

Praxis® exams are graded using a scaled score that ranges from 100 to 200. Passing scores vary from state to state. To find your state’s passing score, visit the Praxis® : State Requirements website. Choose your state, then click on “What are my requirements?” to find the minimum score you’ll need to earn in order to pass the exam.

How to Register for the Praxis® Physical Education: Content and Design Exam

New to Teaching?

Praxis®  tests are used by many state education agencies. If you are new to teaching you will want to check your state’s requirements for certification and licensure. If you are completely new to teaching, you’ll most likely need to complete an educator preparation program before taking your exam.

Once you have received approval from a certification program, you can register for the Praxis® Physical Education: Content and Design exam using these steps:

  1. On the ETS Praxis®  registration page, click on the blue “Create Account” link.
  2. Fill in your information. Your Social Security number is not specifically required by the ETS, but it is required by some states. If you choose to leave it off and later find out your state requires it, it could make it more difficult to register for your test.
  3. After you’ve created your account and logged in, you will be directed to a home page. Select “Register for a Praxis® Test.”
  4. Next, complete the background questions regarding your experience and education.
  5. Almost done! Use the drop-down menu to select your state and agency. Work through the remaining prompts to select your test administration, choose your score recipients, and pay for your test.
  6. Be sure to print your admission ticket. It may not be required by your testing site, but it would be best to have it just in case.

More information on how to register for a Praxis® exam can be found on the Praxis®  website.

Already Certified?

If you’re already certified and would like to add Physical Education: Content and Design to your certifications, you’ll register for the exam by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your ETS Praxis®  account. If you don’t have an ETS account, you can also create one on this page.
  2. Once you are logged in, you will be directed to a home page. Select “Register for a Praxis® Test.”
  3. Review all of your personal information and background questions, and update your information if needed.
  4. Use the drop-down menu to select your state and agency. Work through the remaining prompts to select your test administration, choose your score recipients, and pay for your test.

More information on how to register for a Praxis® exam can be found on the Praxis® website.

That’s it! Once you pass the exam and meet all of your state’s specific requirements, you’ll be qualified to teach physical education in grades K-12!

Honorable Mention

Mometrix Praxis® Physical Education: Content and Design Study Guide

Mometrix is another source for a reliable and up-to-date study guide. One thing to note about Mometrix is that their study guides place a strong emphasis on test-taking tips, tricks, and “secrets,” which might be helpful for the test but less useful in your actual teaching career.

The biggest downside to this resource is that it’s only available as a printed book or e-book. If you prefer a more traditional textbook format, this guide might be right for you. However, many test-takers find that interactive, online study guides are more helpful and user-friendly.
