The Middle School English Language Arts exam measures subject-focused content knowledge as well as academic skills. This exam assesses the skills, content knowledge, and abilities of prospective Language Arts educators. Specifically, this exam measures the test-taker’s abilities in four different competencies:

• reading, including the study of literature, drama, poetry, stories, informational texts, essays, speeches, and biographies;
• use of the English language including conventions of vocabulary development and standard English;
• writing, speaking, and listening; and
• English Language Arts instructional methods.

The tests are created and administered by the Educational Testing Service. The tests are usually taken early in the applicant’s career and many professional teaching certification programs require it for acceptance into the programs.

Each exam has a specific number so that it’s easier to keep track of the exam and your results. If the state just went by the names of each test, it could get confusing quickly. Each exam has a number, and the Praxis® Middle School English Language Arts’ number is 5047.

Praxis® Middle School English Language Arts Exam Breakdown

The Praxis® Middle School English Language Arts (5047) is made up of four content categories, with a number of questions in each category. Some of those questions are selected responses (SR) and some are constructed responses (CR). Here’s a breakdown of the different types of questions.

What is a Passing Score

Each state has a different passing score for the Praxis® Middle School ELA exam. To check what the requirements for your state are, go to this website: https://www.ets.org/Praxis®/states

The score you receive will be a scaled score ranging from 100 to 200. Scaled scores allow the test makers to adjust weighting for each administration based on the questions on that specific exam.

Again, be sure to check with your individual state’s requirements to fully understand your scores.

How to Register for the Praxis® Middle School ELA

New to Teaching?

If you’re new to teaching, the steps you need to take to register for the Praxis® Middle School ELA exam are different than those for already certified teachers. Start by looking at the requirements for your state to make sure you have completed all the expectations set out by ETS. This will likely include completing an approved teacher preparation program. If you’ve never taken this exam and have not been a teacher yet, here’s what you do:

• Go to the ETS website and create a new account.
• You can register either online, by mail, or over the phone.
• If you plan on registering for the Praxis® online or by phone, you will need a debit/credit/check card ready to pay the registration fee.

You can register for the Praxis® online, by phone, or by mail. Here are some details about each registration method.

Online

Registering online is pretty simple. You’ll need to use a debit card to pay for your registration; you’ll also need to print out your admissions ticket to take to the testing center with you.

• Go to the ETS test registration website.
• Create a new account.
• Your new account will let you:
  • register for your Praxis® exam
  • access your admissions tickets
  • cancel or change your registration
  • view your current test scores
  • order Praxis® exam reports
  • input and update your contact information

Phone

• If you register over the telephone, you will be charged an extra $35.
• Call ETS at 1-800-772-9476, Monday through Friday, 8am until 7:45 Eastern Standard Time.
• Have a debit or credit card ready to make a payment over the phone.

Mail

To register by mail:

• Fill out a Test Authorization Voucher Request form, found here.
• To do this correctly, you’ll need to input a certain code, found here.
• Send your voucher and check or money order to:
  • ETS – Praxis®

• Once your request is successfully processed, ETS will send you a voucher ticket and instructions on how to register. You should allow three weeks for delivery.
• When you receive your voucher, you will have one calendar day to use it in order to get your admission ticket.
• Bring your admission ticket to your testing center on the day of your exam.

Already Certified?

If you’re already certified to teach and would like to add a certification or transfer your credentials to another state, you’ll have to create or sign in to an ETS account here. If moving to a different state, you should check the specific requirements for the state you want to teach in to see if any of your current teaching certifications will transfer over. Once you’ve signed into your ETS account, you’ll be able to:

• register for your Praxis® exam
• access your admissions tickets
• cancel or change your registration
• view your current test scores
• order Praxis® exam reports
• input and update your contact information
