First Thing to Know

The Praxis® exam series measures the required academic and pedagogical knowledge and skills needed for teaching. The Praxis® exams provide teacher candidates with an opportunity to demonstrate that they have mastered the necessary knowledge and skills to become an educator.

The Praxis® Health Education (5551) exam is required for those teacher candidates interested in teaching health education at the elementary, middle, or high school level. This exam measures the skills and knowledge required to teach health at these levels.

The identification number for the Praxis® Health Education is 551. All the exams in the Praxis® series have a number. This number is used by test administrators to refer to the exam instead of using the lengthy name.

Praxis® Health Education Exam Breakdown

The Praxis® Health Education (5551) is made up of five content areas. The test will include 120 multiple-choice questions and will be completed on a computer. You will have two hours to complete the exam unless you qualify for accommodations.

What is a Passing Score

Praxis® exams are graded using scaled scores. When you get your results, you will see a number between 100 and 200, not a traditional percentage.

States set their own passing rates for the Praxis® exams. You can find the requirements for your state here.

How to Register for the Praxis® Health Education Exam

New to Teaching?

If you are new to education, you will need to complete a teacher certification program before you register for any tests. All states have different processes and requirements for becoming a certified teacher. A good place to start is the Praxis® State Requirements page. On this page, you can find the link for your state and view specific resources which will help you start the process.

Once you have completed a certification program and have approval from that program, you can register for your exam using the ETS Praxis® Registration Page.

Click the blue “Create Account” button located in the “New User” box.
Enter your information. Be sure you enter the same name as the primary identification document that you will present at the testing center. ETS will not require your Social Security number, but some states will. If you do not provide it and later find out your state requires it, you might have delays in the processing of your application.
After logging in, you will be directed to a home page with several links. On the left-hand side under “Registrations and Orders,” you will see “Register for a Praxis® Test.” Click this link.
The following page contains several optional questions about your experience and education. Though not required by ETS, they may be required by your state.
You are almost done registering! Next, you will use the drop-down menus to select your state and agency.
Complete your registration by selecting Praxis® Health Education (5551) and your score recipients.
Pay for your test and print your test ticket. Although it might not be required at the testing location, it is best to have it just in case.

Already Certified?

If you are already certified and have taken any Praxis® exams in the past, this should be a quick and easy process!

Use the Praxis® Registration Page to log in. If you have forgotten your log-in information, use the “Forgot User Name” or “Forgot Password” link to recover your information.
After you log in, you will be directed to a home page with several links. Under “Registrations and Orders” there should be a link to “Register for a Praxis® Test.” Click this link.
Review your personal information and background questions. Make any needed changes.
You are almost done! You will use the drop-down menus to select your state and agency.
Complete registration by selecting Praxis® Health Education (5551) and choose your score recipients.
Pay for your test and print your test ticket. Although it might not be required at your testing location, it is best to have it just in case.

You have successfully registered for your exam. Congratulations!

Now, all you need to do is arrive to take your test on the day you selected. As long as you have met the other requirements in your state, once you pass the exam you will be qualified to teach health!
