First Thing to Know
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) administers the Praxis® tests to prospective teachers across the country. There are many different versions of Praxis® tests, and you will only need to take the test(s) required for certification in your grade level and subject area. To check the Praxis® requirements in your state visit the ETS website and select your state from the drop-down menu.
Praxis® General Science: Content Knowledge is used to measure the knowledge and skills for secondary level general science.
The Praxis® General Science: Content Knowledge has the test number 5435. It is a good idea to be familiar with the test name and number, since some study sources may refer only to the number instead of writing out the full test name. Other Praxis® exams also have a unique four-digit number.
Praxis® General Science: Content Knowledge Exam Breakdown
The Praxis® General Science: Content Knowledge is made up of 135 selected-response questions divided over five key content categories. You must pass each content category to pass the entire Praxis® General Science: Content Knowledge (5435) exam. The different topics of the exam are broken down in the table below.

The Praxis® General Science does not contain subtests, so you will need to take the full exam, including all five content categories, during the first attempt and any retakes.
What is a Passing Score
Let’s get to the good stuff — passing that test!
Passing scores for the Praxis® General Science: Content Knowledge vary by state, which can make it a little bit difficult to figure out how well you need to do on the test. The ETS website includes a table with passing scores for each state.
You will receive a score report after completing the test, but what do the scores actually mean? Your raw score is the number of correct answers from each content category. Your scaled score is the raw score adjusted for the differences between test forms.
How to Register for the Praxis® General Science: Content Knowledge Exam
New to Teaching?
First, make sure you have completed your state’s certification program before registering for the exam. Each state has its own certification process and may have different Praxis® testing requirements. Select your state from the Praxis® State Requirements page on the ETS website to learn more about the specific requirements for different states.
For new teachers, the Praxis® registration process can be a little daunting. We’ll help you go through the process step by step.
- Visit the ETS registration page and create an account by clicking the blue button in the “New User” section.
- Fill in the required fields. We recommend including your Social Security number in the optional field because you may need it to complete the registration later on.
- Log in to your new account and click “Register for a Praxis® test” on the home page.
- Now complete the optional information about your past experiences and education. It is best to submit this information in case it is required by your state.
- Select your state and agency from the drop-down lists and respond to the remaining prompts about test administration.
- Hang in there! You’re almost done. Choose your score recipients. ETS will send your scores to these recipients automatically.
- Pay for the test.
- Print and save your test confirmation. Bring the test confirmation with you on test day as proof of your registration.

- Log in to your account on the ETS registration page. If you forgot your username or password, don’t worry! Simply use the “Forgot User Name” or “Forgot Password” links to reset your information.
- Navigate to the home page, and click the “Register for a Praxis® test” link in the upper left-hand corner.
- Review your personal information. Make sure to correct any outdated information.
- Select your state and agency from the drop-down lists. Respond to all remaining prompts and select your test administration.
- Looking good! Now choose your score recipients.
- Pay for the test.
- Print and save your test confirmation. Bring the test confirmation with you on test day as proof of registration.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t have enough practice questions to really train for taking the full-length exam. With the ETS companion alone, you would miss out on practicing the pacing and repetition necessary to be successful.
