First Thing to Know

Praxis® exams, which are designed and administered by ETS, assess specific subject matter and the general knowledge of educators for grades K through 12. Educators must pass certain Praxis® exams in order to teach grades K through 12 in the United States.

The Early Childhood Education (5025) exam evaluates how well potential educators would educate young children in the subjects of language arts, mathematics, social studies, fine arts, and science.

The number for the Praxis® Early Childhood Education exam is 5025. Each exam has a specific number assigned to it. These numbers help keep track of the different exams and can help you ensure that you are registering for the right test.

Praxis®  Early Childhood Education Exam Breakdown

Many different states use the Praxis® Early Education exam in their licensing processes. Check this website to make sure you have everything you need to become an educator in your state.

The Early Childhood Education exam is one test broken into five different content categories.  Here’s a table showing how much of the exam each category accounts for:

Content Category Approximate Percentage of Exam Approximate Number of Questions
Language and Literacy 30% 36
Mathematics 25% 30
Social Studies 14% 17
Science 14% 17
Health and Phys Ed;

Creative and Performing Arts

17% 20

The test consists of 120 selected-response questions. You’ll have two hours to complete the entire exam.

What is a Passing Score

Praxis® exams are graded with a scaled scoring system, and scores range from 100 to 200. Passing scores vary from state to state. Most states require a scaled score of 156, but you’ll still want to check your state’s requirements here.

If you don’t pass, you can take the test again, but you have to wait 21 days to do so, not counting your testing date. So if you originally took the exam on the 1st of the month, and want to retake it, you have to wait until the 23rd of the month.

How to Register for the  Praxis®  Early Childhood Education Exam

New to Teaching?

If you are new to teaching, you will need to participate in a certification program before registering for a Praxis® exam. Each state is able to create their own certification process, so you will need to find your specific state’s requirements.

A good starting point is the Praxis® State Requirements page. From there, you can click on your state’s link. This page provides helpful links on how to begin the certification process.

Once you have approval from a certification program, you will register using the ETS Praxis® registration page.

  1. Select the blue “Create Account” link.
  2. Fill in your information. Your social security number is not specifically required by the ETS page, but it is required by some states.
  3. Once you are logged in, you will be directed to a home page that provides relevant links. In the upper left-hand corner, select “Register for a Praxis® Test.”
  4. Next, complete the optional information regarding your experience and education. While the questions are not all required by the ETS website, they may be required by your state.
  5. You’re almost done! Use the drop-down lists to select your state and agency, working through the remaining prompts to select your test administration, choose your score recipients, and pay for your test.
  6. Print and keep your test ticket. It may not be required by your testing site, but it would be best to have it just in case.

Already Certified?

Registering for your test will be quick and easy!

  1. Log in to your ETS account. If you have forgotten your password, the “forgot username” and “forgot password” links will help you retrieve your login information.
  2. Once you are logged in, you will be directed to a home page that provides relevant links. In the upper left-hand corner, select “Register for a Praxis® Test.”
  3. Review your personal information and update if needed.
  4. Next, use the drop-down lists to select your state and agency, working through the remaining prompts to select your test administration, choose your score recipients, and pay for your test.

Once you pass the exam, you are qualified to teach early childhood education in your state!

Yay!

Don’t forget to check the ETS website for your state’s additional requirements.
