So you’re going to take the Praxis® Core (5713,5723,5733) exam and you have some questions about it. I bet at least one of them is on this list:

  • Where do I find a free practice test?
  • An exam breakdown?
  • How do I register for the test?

These are excellent questions. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place.

My name is Marshall Highet, and at Best in Class  we are here to help you get familiar with everything you need to know about the Praxis® Core!

First Thing to Know

The full name of this test is the Praxis® Core Academic Skills for Educators exam. These tests measure subject-focused content knowledge as well as academic skills. The Praxis® Core is taken by individuals who are entering a teacher preparation program as part of their certification process for teaching grades K through 12.

Specifically, the Praxis® Core measures academic skills and content knowledge in reading, writing, and mathematics. There are three different tests, and each has a specific number to help keep track of the different tests:

Praxis® Core Reading: 5713

Praxis® Core Writing: 5723

Praxis® Core Math: 5733.

You can also choose to take all three tests at the same time by registering for the Praxis® Core: Combined Test, which has an identification number of 5752.

The tests are created and administered by Educational Testing Services. The tests are usually taken early in the applicant’s career; many professional teaching certification programs require them for acceptance into the program.

If you’re planning on taking the Praxis® Core, you’ll want to check your state’s requirements on the ETS website.

Praxis® Core Exam Breakdown

The Praxis® Core  is made up of three tests. This means you must pass each individual subject test to pass the entire Praxis® Core exam.

Here is a breakdown of each section of the test.

Test Section Number Number of Questions Length in Minutes
Reading 5713 56 85
Writing 5723 40 selected response

2 essays

40

60

Mathematics 5733 56 selected response or numeric entry 90

The Praxis® Core exam can be taken in separate increments or as one combined test. The cost is $150 for taking the whole test at one time or $90 for each subject test.

If you do not pass one of the tests, you can retake that subject test after 21 days, not counting your test date. This means that if you took the test initially on the first of the month, you’ll have to wait until the 23rd to retake it. If you violate this rule, ETS will cancel your test scores and refuse you a refund.

What is a Passing Score

The Praxis® Core exam is graded on a scale of 100 – 200. Passing scores differ from state to state. It’s a good idea to check your state’s requirements here. Typical passing scores for most states are shown below. However, there are exceptions in South Carolina, Washington, Pennsylvania, North Dakota, and Maine.

Test Section Typical Passing Score
Reading 156
Writing 162
Mathematics 150

However, if you think you need to brush up on some of the material, you’ll likely need a more extensive study guide.
