First Thing to Know

MEGA stands for Missouri Educator Gateway Assessments. MoGEA stands for Missouri General Education Assessment. The MoGEA test is used to evaluate potential educators to make sure they are qualified to teach public school in Missouri according to the state’s regulations and content standards.

The MoGEA is made up of four subtests, each with a different identification number:

MoGEA Subtest Identification Number
Reading Comprehension and Interpretation 066
Writing 067
Mathematics 068
Science and Social Studies 069

Each MEGA exam or subtest has a specific number so that it’s easier to keep track of the different tests. If the state just went by the names of each test, it could get confusing quickly.

MEGA MoGEA Exam Breakdown

The MoGEA is made up of four subtests: Reading Comprehension and Interpretation, Writing, Mathematics, and Science and Social Studies. You must pass each individual subtest to pass the entire MoGEA. Here’s a table with a more detailed breakdown of the four subtests that make up the MoGEA:

Subtest Time Format/Number of Questions
Reading Comprehension and Interpretation 75 mins 39 multiple-choice questions
Mathematics 75 mins 40 multiple-choice questions
Science and Social Studies 60 mins 40 multiple-choice questions
Written component 60 mins 1 essay

The test in total takes four and a half hours to complete. You must pass all four subtests in order to become an educator in the state of Missouri. Your score is based on how many responses were correct in each competency.

With the MoGEA, you have the opportunity to take all four subtests in one session, but you can only do that one time. If you fail any of the subtests, you can retake them independently. If you are retaking a test, you have to re-register and wait 30 days before retaking it.

What is a Passing Score

Passing scores for the MoGEA are slightly different than other exams. Passing scores are determined by a test-taker’s Educator Prep Program. These can change from year to year and from institution to institution. You will need to check with your school for the exact passing score requirements. Here’s an example of the passing benchmarks for some colleges for the years 2019 to 2020.

Institution name Reading Comprehension Writing Mathematics Science and Social Studies
Jefferson College 202 193 200 204
Park University 183 167 180 188
University of Missouri – Columbia 220 220 220 220

How to Register for the MEGA MoGEA Exam

New to Teaching?

In order to register for the MoGEA (066-069) you need to create an account or log in to your pre-existing account with MEGA – Missouri Educator Gateway Assessments. Then follow these steps:

  • Click on the “Register for MoGEA” to choose your test. Once there, you will have to answer some background questions, choose a test, and agree to the testing policies.
  • Under the “Open Registration” tab, click “Schedule” to select the date, time, and location of your preferred test.
  • Review the details of your registration and submit your payment with a credit, debit, or check card.

Congrats!

Already Certified?

If you’re already certified to teach in another state, you may not need to take the MoGEA if your current certificate will transfer over to Missouri. You can be granted a comparable certificate in the state of Missouri if your out-of-state certificate is verified. Depending on the number of years you’ve been teaching, you may be qualified for an initial or career certificate.

You can check on the status of your certification on Missouri’s Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE) website.

MEGA Practice Test Questions

Missouri Educators Gateway Exams (MEGA) provides some substantial resources on its website. This practice test matches each of its questions to a competency, which is very useful for figuring out what you need to study to pass the MoGEA.

This resource is the same entity that creates and puts out the exam. It is an excellent idea to study with materials provided by the test-maker. Keep in mind, however, that this is not a diagnostic test, meaning it does not calculate your results for you or provide a report showing you what you need to focus on. There are also only a handful of free practice questions for each subtest, although there are longer practice tests available for purchase.

While these practice tests are free and reliable, they are nowhere near the length of the real test, so you won’t get a full picture of what to expect. Also, the writing subtest practice test has questions about writing in general, while the real MoGEA writing subtest consists of an essay.
