First Thing to Know
Let’s start with the basics! GACE stands for Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators. This is a state-run program that ensures that all public educators are qualified and prepared to teach. Every public educator in Georgia must be certified through GACE.
All educators must take the Program Admission exam to demonstrate their reading, writing, and mathematics abilities. Future teachers may opt out of this test if they have high enough scores on either the SAT, ACT, or GRE.
The identification number for the combined Program Admission test is 710. You may choose to take the subtests individually, in which case you’ll use different test numbers for each subtest. Georgia assigns each test an arbitrary number to better track the test. Rather than referring to the tests by their long, possibly confusing names, the state uses the identification number for record-keeping.
GACE Program Admission Exam Breakdown
The Program Admission exam contains the following three subtests:
Test I – Reading
Test II – Mathematics
Test III – Writing
This means you must pass each of the three individual subtests to pass the entire GACE Program Admission (710) exam.
You can find testing times, testing durations, and number of questions per test on page 5 of this preparation manual.
You may choose to take the tests individually or collectively. You will save money by taking all of the tests at one time, but if this doesn’t work for you, then take them separately! If you fail only one of the subtests, then you can retake it individually.
What is a Passing Score
In order to pass, you must score 250 out of 300. This is a scaled score, meaning that you do not necessarily have to answer 83% of the questions to pass. There will be field questions that do not count toward your score, and some questions will have a higher value than others. You will not know the value of any question during or after the test, so treat them all as important. In general, if you get about 75% of the questions correct, you will pass!
How to Register for the GACE Program Admission Exam
New to Teaching?
If you are interested in teaching in Georgia, you do NOT need a degree in education! Great news! You must have a college degree for most positions with the exception of some technical and career teacher jobs. If you have a degree and are looking at entering the field of education, then start exploring alternative certification programs. Don’t just look at their websites, call and ask questions, and ask for reviews or references.
Once you are ready to sign up for this exam, follow these steps:
- Create a MyPSC account on the GaPSC website.
- Once the account is created, go to www.gace.ets.org and login using the MY GACE ACCOUNT button in the top right corner
- Log in or create an account on the next page
- Once you are into your account, click on “Register for Test” on the left side
- Search the test choices and select Program Admission
- Then click Schedule Tests and you will have the opportunity to select a testing location
- After selecting location, you will choose a date and time to test
- Finally, you will pay for the test
