First Thing to Know

The Elementary Education assessment is one of the GACE exams. GACE is an acronym for the Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators. If you want to become certified as a teacher in the state of Georgia, then you need to pass certain GACE assessments.

The purpose of the GACE Elementary Education is to ensure that teachers have the professional knowledge necessary to teach students in grades Pre-K through 5 in Georgia’s public schools.

The exam used to be called the GACE Early Childhood Education assessment, but it was recently renamed.

The GACE Elementary Education assessment is required for educators who want to teach any of the following elementary subjects:

  • Reading and Language Arts
  • Social Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Health Education, Physical Education, and the Arts

Each one of the GACE assessments has an assigned number, and the number for Elementary Education is 501. There are many different educator exams and these numbers exist to help the state keep track of the different tests.

 GACE Elementary Education Exam Breakdown

The Elementary Education assessment is made up of two subtests that include three subareas each. This means you must pass each individual subtest and subarea to pass the entire GACE Elementary Education (501) exam.

Subtest  Time Limit  Number of Questions
Subtest I (001) 120 min 75 selected-response

2 constructed-response

Subtest II (002) 120 min 75 selected-response

Subtest I (001)
Subarea Approximate Percentage of Exam
  1. Reading and Language Arts
50%
  1. Social Studies
25%
  1. Analysis (constructed-response)
25%

Subtest II (002)
Subarea Approximate Percentage of Exam
  1. Mathematics
53%
  1. Science
30%
  1. Health Education, Physical Education, and the Arts
17%

The two subtests can be taken individually or in a single session. If you do not pass one of the subtests, you can retake that subtest without retaking the entire test.

What is a Passing Score

A passing score on the GACE Elementary Education assessment is 220 or above out of 300.

You can pass the test at either the induction level or the professional level. You need a score of at least 220 to pass at the induction level, and a score of at least 250 to pass at the professional level.

Already Certified?

If you are already a certified classroom teacher, you can add certifications by taking additional certification exams, even if they are not the same subject as your original certification. • Step 1: Click on the “Become a Georgia Educator” link at the top of the page.
