The FTCE, or Florida Teacher Certification Examinations, are a series of exams that provide potential teachers the opportunity to demonstrate their content and pedagogical knowledge necessary to educate students effectively in Florida. They offer several types of exams: leadership, general knowledge, and subject area exams.
The FTCE Social Science 6-12 (037) is a Subject Area Exam. This exam focuses on social science content for grades 6-12. This specific exam gives educator candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and pedagogical knowledge pertaining to social science in grades 6-12.
Why is there a number in the exam title? The identification number for the FTCE Social Science 6-12 exam is 037. State agencies and test administrators use identification numbers to refer to the exams. It’s easier to use the three-digit number instead of the lengthy name.
FTCE Social Science 6–12 Exam Breakdown
The FTCE Social Science 6–12 (037) exam is a computer-based test made up of six competency areas and 120 multiple-choice questions. The time limit on this test is two and a half hours. You must complete the entire test in this time limit unless you qualify for accommodations.

You will need to complete the entire FTCE Social Science 6-12 (037) exam in one session. If you do not pass and you want to retake the test, you must retake the entire exam. You must wait 31 days after your most recent attempt before retaking the exam.
What is a Passing Score
In order to pass the FTCE Social Science 6-12 (037) exam, you must earn a scaled score of at least 200. Points are not deducted for wrong answers! This is important to know and should give you a bit more confidence going into this exam. On this exam, it is better to make an educated guess than leave answers blank. You should receive a pass/non-pass status immediately after taking your exam and will receive the official score within four weeks of testing.
How to Register for the FTCE Social Science 6–12 Exam
New to Teaching?
If you are totally new to teaching, you must first complete a teacher certification program before you take any exams. You can review the different pathways to teacher certification in Florida here.
If you are interested in earning your alternative certificate, you can view Florida’s program here.
After you have decided which pathway works best for you and have completed the necessary program, you can register for your exam.
- Create an account here by clicking the “Create Account” button.
- Click “Create Account” and create a username and password.
- Enter the required personal information. It is important to enter this information correctly or it’s possible you will experience delays or problems receiving your scores.
- Review and confirm personal information.
- After you have created an account and logged in, you will be taken to your account home page. From here, you will have the option to register for an exam.
- Click “Register for the FTCE/FELE” to select a test.
- Read and agree to testing policies.
- If you qualify for accommodations, you will need to request them when you register.
- Select the FTCE Social Science 6-12 (037) from the menu and agree to the retake information.
- Complete the background information questions and choose where your scores will be sent. You are encouraged to submit your scores to your institution or certification program so they can evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the preparation program.
- Review the rescheduling and absentee policies.
- Verify your registration information to ensure that you have selected the correct exam and the institution or district that will receive your scores.
- Return to your account home page and you should see your exam under “Open Registrations.”
- You are almost done registering! Click schedule to select the testing site, time, and date of your exam.
- Review your registration and submit payment.
You are now registered to take the FTCE Social Science 6-12 (037) exam! You will arrive at the testing center on the day you selected and complete your exam. Upon passing your exam, and completing any other required exams and preparation programs, you will be certified to teach social science in grades 6-12!
