First Thing to Know

FCTE stands for Florida Teacher Certification Examinations. These tests are used to evaluate the proficiency of potential educators to determine whether they can teach public school in Florida. Florida’s Sunshine State Standards are used to make this assessment. FTCE refers to 47 different exams: 42 subject area exams, four general knowledge subtests, and one professional education exam.

This specific test – Mathematics 6-12 – is used to evaluate potential math teachers for grades 6-12.

The identification number for the Mathematics 6-12 test is 026. Each exam has a specific number so that it’s easier to keep track of the exam and your results. If the state just went by the names of each test, it could quickly get confusing.

What is a Passing Score

In the simplest terms, FTCEs are Pass or Not Pass, meaning that if you pass, you will receive a Pass as a grade; if you don’t, you will receive a Not Pass. You must get a scaled score of at least 200 in order to pass the FTCE Mathematics 6-12 (026) exam. Here’s what that means in layman’s terms: you need to get approximately 67% of the questions correct in order to receive a scaled score of 200. 67% of 75 is 50.25, so you need to answer 51 questions correctly for a passing score.

How to Register for the FTCE Mathematics 6-12 Exam

New to Teaching?

In order to register for the FTCE Mathematics 6-12 (026) test, you need to create an account or log in to your pre-existing account here. Then follow these steps:

  • Click on “Register for FTCE/FELE” to choose your test. Once there, you will have to answer some background questions, choose a test, and agree to the testing policies.

Already Certified?

If you’re already a teacher in Florida but would like to add a certification on top of the one you already have, here’s what you do:

  • Submit a completed application form (CG-10) and the applicable processing fee.
  • Demonstrate a mastery of the subject you would like to teach.

You may be wondering: How do I demonstrate a mastery of the subject matter? Here’s what a demonstration of subject matter will look like:

  • Bachelor’s-degree-level subject: earn a passing score on the subject area exam.
  • Master’s-degree-level subject: complete the required degree and the content area courses as listed by the State Board and earn a passing grade on the subject area exam.

If you have an out-of-state certification in the subject you would like to teach, you should check the Florida Board of Education’s reciprocity standards to see if your certification will effectively transfer over.

Once you pass the exam, you’re qualified to teach math to grades 6-12 in the Sunshine State (that’s Florida)!

Yay!
