First Thing to Know

FTCE stands for Florida Teacher Certification Examinations. These tests are used to evaluate potential public school educators by determining their knowledge and proficiency in various areas related to teaching. The General Knowledge test is one of these examinations.

The General Knowledge test is used to assess a potential educator’s proficiency in basic skills as they start their career. The identification number for the General Knowledge test is 082. Each exam has a specific number to make it easier to keep track of the exam and your results. It’s important to know the identification number so that you can make sure you are registering for the right test and studying the right material.

FTCE General Knowledge Exam Breakdown

The FTCE General Knowledge test is made up of four subtests: an English language skills subtest, a mathematics subtest, a reading subtest, and an essay subtest. You must pass each individual subtest to pass the entire FTCE General Knowledge (082) exam.

All of the FTCE General Knowledge tests are computer-based tests, or CBTs. Below is a table with some useful information about each subtest.

Subtest Time Format/Number of questions Passing Score
English language skills (826) 40 mins About 40 multiple choice questions Scaled score of at least 200
Mathematics (828) 1 hour 40 mins About 40 multiple choice questions Scaled score of at least 200
Reading (827) 55 mins About 40 multiple choice questions Scaled score of at least 200
Essay (825) 50 mins 1 essay At least 8 out of 12 points

You must pass all four subtests in order to pass the FTCE General Knowledge test. You can register and take the subtests in whatever combination suits you. If you fail one of the subtests, you only have to retake that particular subtest. The costs for the subtests are as follows:

  • One subtest = $32.50
  • Two subtests = $65
  • Three subtests = $97.50
  • All four subtests = $130

What is a Passing Score

In the simplest terms, FTCEs are Pass or Not Pass, meaning that if you pass, you will receive a Pass as a grade; if you don’t, you will receive a Not Pass. You must get a scaled score of at least 200 in three of the subtests and eight out of 12 points on the essay to pass the FTCE General Knowledge (082) exam.

Here’s what that really means: For each subtest, you need to get a certain number of questions correct. For the ELA skills subtest, you need to get 70% of the questions right – that’s 28 out of 40 questions. For the math subtest, you need to get 72% of the questions right, or 29 of them. For the reading subtest, 75% of your responses need to be correct, which is 30 of the questions.

For the essay question, two independent graders evaluate the essay independently and then combine their scores for your final score. If the assigned scores are more than one point apart, another assessor is brought in to provide a third assessment.
