This particular exam, the FTCE Exceptional Student Education K-12, is a subject area examination used to test your readiness to teach special education in grades K-12.

The identification number for the FTCE Exceptional Student Education K–12 is 061. This identification number’s purpose is to help differentiate between different state examinations. FTCE Exceptional Student Education K–12 Exam Breakdown

The FTCE Exceptional Student Education K–12 is made up of 120 selected-response questions over six competencies. You will have two and a half hours and you must pass 70% of the questions to pass the entire FTCE Exceptional Student Education K–12 (061) exam.

If you do not pass the FTCE Exceptional Student Education K-12 the first time and you want to retake it you will need to retake the entire exam again.

What is a Passing Score

The results of the test will be PASS or FAIL. At the end of the test, an unofficial pass or fail note will be provided. The test has a scaled score that assigns different scores to each question based upon the difficulty level. A scaled score of 200 needs to be achieved to pass.

How to Register for the FTCE Exceptional Student Education K–12 Exam

New to Teaching?

That’s great! What an exciting journey you’re about to begin!

You will want to speak with your academic advisor about appropriate coursework at your college. You may also need to contact an Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) for advice about registering for appropriate coursework. Here is a list of EPIs operated by various colleges in Florida. Other helpful information can be found on the Florida Certification Programs and Florida Educator Preparation Programs websites.

Once you have completed the necessary coursework you can apply for certification.

The Bureau of Educator Certification (BEC) determines your testing requirements. You can visit the BEC website for more information on how to apply for certification in the state of Florida.

Once you have received notification that you are eligible for a certificate, you can begin the process of registering for your FTCE exam.

  1. On the FTCE website you will create a FTCE/FELE account by clicking “Create Account” and follow the question prompts. Registration is available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  2. Once your account is active you will log in to the FTCE website and click “Register for the FTCE/FELE” to select your test. You will then be prompted to answer background questions. You’ll need to agree to the testing policies to continue.
  3. Under “Open Registrations,” click “Schedule” to select your test site, date, and time.
  4. Review your registration and submit your payment using a credit or debit card.

During registration, you may choose to have your score sent directly to your institution or Professional Development Certification Program (PDCP).

An appointment confirmation email will be sent to you after you schedule your test appointment.

Great! Registering for the FTCE Exceptional Student Education K-12 will be quick and easy!
