First Thing to Know

FTCE is an acronym for the Florida Teaching Certification Examinations. ESOL is an acronym for English for Speakers of Other Languages. Anyone who wants to teach English for Speakers of Other Languages in Florida from kindergarten to 12th grade needs to pass the FTCE ESOL K-12 exam.

Each of the FTCE subject area exams has an assigned number, and the number for the ESOL K-12 exam is 047. There are many different educator exams and these numbers exist to help the state keep track of the different tests.

FTCE ESOL K-12 Exam Breakdown

The ESOL K-12 exam includes 120 multiple-choice questions covering 11 different competencies. The test is computer-based and lasts 2 hours and 20 minutes. The table below shows what percentage of the exam is covered by each competency.

What is a Passing Score

You’ll need a scaled score of at least 200 to pass the FTCE ESOL K-12. This equates to answering about 70% of the questions correctly. If you don’t pass, you’ll need to retake the entire exam; you cannot retake certain portions.

How to Register for the FTCE ESOL K-12 Exam

New to Teaching?

If you’re wanting to begin a career in education, you’ll most likely need to complete an Educator Preparation Program prior to taking your certification exams. Information on this process can be found on the Florida Certification Programs and Florida Educator Preparation Programs websites.

Once you have completed the necessary coursework or programs, you can apply for certification. Visit the BEC website for more information on how to apply for certification in the state of Florida.

After you receive notification that you are eligible for a certificate, you can begin the process of registering for your FTCE exam using the steps below.

  1. On the FTCE website click “Create Account” and follow the question prompts.
  2. After creating an account, log in to the FTCE website and click “Register for the FTCE/FELE” to select your test. You will then be prompted to answer background questions and agree to the testing policies.
  3. Under “Open Registrations,” click “Schedule” to select your test site, date, and time.
  4. Review your registration and submit your payment using a credit or debit card.

During registration, you may choose to have your score sent directly to your institution or Professional Development Certification Program (PDCP).

Already Certified?

If you are already certified to teach in Florida and would like to add ESOL K-12 to your certifications, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your FTCE/FELE account (you can also create an account from this page).
  2. Once you are logged in, click “Register for the FTCE/FELE” and select your test. You will be asked a few background questions and you’ll need to agree to the testing policies.
  3. Under “Open Registrations,” click “Schedule” to choose the date, time, and place of your exam.
  4. Review your registration and complete your payment by entering a debit or credit card.

An appointment confirmation email will be sent to you after you schedule your test appointment.

Once you pass the ESOL K-12 and any other required exams, you are qualified to teach English for Speakers of Other Languages in the state of Florida!
