First Thing to Know

To begin with, FTCE stands for Florida Teacher Certification Examinations. These exams, yours included, are used to evaluate those who would like to teach in Florida. If you pass this exam, which adheres to the Florida’s Sunshine State Standards, you will be certified to teach these grades in Florida.

The FTCE Elementary Education K-6 is for prospective teachers who want to teach elementary – kindergarten through grade 6 – in Florida. The FTCE Elementary Education K-6 exam’s number is 060. These numbers help the state keep track of the different exams. It’s good to know the exam number to ensure you are registering for the right exam and studying the right material.

FTCE Elementary Education K-6 Exam Breakdown

The Elementary Education K-6 is made up of four subtests: Language Arts and Reading, Social Science, Science, and Mathematics. You must pass each individual subtest to pass the entire Elementary Education K-6 exam.

Here’s a breakdown table of the individual subtests:

Subtest Number of Questions Time Limit  Scheduled Break Supplemental Materials Provided
Language Arts and Reading 60 65 minutes 15 minute scheduled break when taking three or more subtests None
Social Science 55 65 minutes None
Science 55 70 minutes None
Mathematics 50 70 minutes Math reference sheet

If this is the first time you’re taking the test, you must register and take all four subtests together. After that first attempt, you can register and take the subtests in any combination you’d like. In order to earn a passing score on the exam, you must pass all the subtests. So if you fail one or more, you can register for and retake just those subtests.

What is a Passing Score

To pass the FTCE Elementary Education K-6 exam, you have to respond correctly to a certain percentage of the questions per subtest. Here’s a table with a breakdown of each subtest, including how many questions are included in each subtest, the percentage of answers you need to get right, and how many correct responses amount to that percentage.

Subtest Number of questions  Percentage of correct responses needed to pass Number of correct responses needed to pass
Language Arts and Reading 60 74% 45
Social Science 55 71% 39
Science 55 71% 39
Mathematics 50 70% 35

How to Register for the FTCE Elementary Education K-6 Exam

New to Teaching?

You may be wondering how to register for the FTCE Elementary Education K-6 exam. Here’s a breakdown of the steps you need to take to register for this exam.

  • First you need to set up an FTCE account. If you’re not a first-time user, you don’t need to create a new account; you can just log in.
  • Click on “Register for FTCE/FELE test.” Once you do, you’ll have to answer some questions about your background, agree to the testing policies, and choose your test.
  • Under “Open Registrations” you’ll see a button for “Schedule.” Click it, and it will take you to a page where you can select testing sites and times.
  • Review your details to make sure everything is correct and then pay. You’ll need a credit, debit, or checking card to pay for the test.

Here are some details that you may find useful: You will be asked if you’d like your scores sent to your institution or PDCP (Professional Development Certification Program). The FTCE strongly encourages you to agree to this. Your score, as well as those of your peers, will help evaluate the efficacy of your program or institution.

If you don’t schedule a test time when you register and pay for your test, you will have one year to do so. If you don’t choose a time and location for your test within a year, then you’ll have to re-register to see the available testing times.

Already Certified?

If you already have your teacher certification and want to add another certification, there are some things you need to know. At the very least you must complete a full application to add another subject or endorsement. You also have to satisfy the requirements described by the state board in order to add subjects or endorsements to your existing certification. (An endorsement attests to your qualifications in a certain subject matter but cannot stand on its own on a certificate.)

Also, be sure to check the up-to-date requirements outlined by Florida, as they are subject to change.

It’s a complicated process. Here’s a great resource to help you muddle through the process of adding to your certification.

Once you pass the exam, you’re qualified to teach Elementary Education K-6 in the state of Florida! Hooray!
