First Thing to Know

CSET stands for California Subject Examinations for Teachers. These tests are used to certify prospective teachers in California by assessing the test-takers’ knowledge of specific content for a particular subject.

CSET exams are developed according to the California Common Core State Standards, California curriculum frameworks, CTC (Commision on Teacher Credentialing) program standards, and teacher education curricula.

This particular CSET exam, the CSET Multiple Subjects, is made up of three individual subtests. Each of these individual subtests has a specific identification number for record keeping purposes. The subtests cover different topics, as shown in the table below:

Subtest  Identification Number Topics Covered
Subtest I 101 -Reading, Language, and Literature

-History and Social Science

Subtest II 214 -Science

-Mathematics

Subtest III 103 -Physical Education

-Human Development

-Visual and Performing Arts

CSET Multiple Subjects Exam Breakdown

Since the CSET Multiple Subjects is made up of three subtests, this means you must pass each individual subtest in order to pass the overall exam. Here’s a table including more information about each subtest, including the number of questions, what kind of questions there are, and how much time you’re given to take the exam.

Subtest Domains Number of multiple choice problems Number of constructed-

response questions

Time allotted
I (101) Reading, Language, and Literature 26 2 3 hrs
History and Social Science 26 2
II (214) Science 26 2 3 hrs
Mathematics 26 2
III (103) Physical Education 13 1 2 hrs & 15 mins
Human Development 13 1
Visual and Performing Arts 13 1

As the test-taker, you can choose whether to take all three subtests together or take them one at a time.

If you take the subtests at the same time, you’ll have five hours to complete all three subtests. It costs $247 to take all three subtests together, or $99 per subtest if taken individually. This means that taking them together will save you money, but you’ll also have less time to complete each section.

If you take all three subtests in a single session, you will be presented with one subtest at a time. You can choose the order they go in and how much time you spend on each one, but you cannot work on two tests simultaneously.

What is a Passing Score

The passing score for each subtest (103, 214, &104) is 220. Your score will be a scaled score ranging from 100 to 300. Generally speaking, you’ll need to get about 70% of the questions correct on each subtest. Remember that you’ll need to pass all three subtests in order to pass the entire exam.

How to Register for the CSET Multiple Subjects Exam

New to Teaching?

Before you register for your CSET you will need to apply for your credentials. You can find teaching credentials requirements on the CTC website. You’ll also need to make an account with CECA (California Educator Credentialing Assessments) by clicking “create an account now” on the login page.

Once your application has been approved and you’ve created an account, you can register for the CSET using the steps below:

  1. Sign in to your account.
  2. Choose a test program (CSET), select your test, and designate institutions to receive your test results.
  3. Answer background questions and review and agree to testing rules.
  4. Submit your payment using a credit or debit card
  5. Schedule your test appointment by choosing an exam location, date, and time.

Try to register as early as possible. Test appointments can fill up fast!

After you’ve registered, you’ll receive an email with your registration details including your testing date, time, and address of the testing center. You’ll also get directions to the center.

Already Certified?

If you’re already certified to teach in a different state, or if you are registering to add a subject matter certification to your existing credentials, here’s what you do:

If you’re coming in from out of state and want to transfer your credentials over, you must hold a professional-level credential in order to qualify. The following documents do not meet California’s requirements to transfer your credentials over:

  • Internship documents
  • Apprenticeship documents
  • Temporary or nonrenewable documents
  • Documents that require the applicant to complete subject matter exams

To qualify for the Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential with your out-of-state certificate, you must provide:

  • A completed application (link found here)
  • Official transcripts
  • Your unexpired out-of-state teaching license
  • A fingerprint clearance exam

Once you pass the exam, you are well on your way to teaching in the state of California!

Yay!

CSET Preparation Materials

The California Educator Credentialing Assessments (CECA) website has free practice tests that can help you prepare for the exam. These practice tests are created by Pearson, the company responsible for the actual exam. It’s great to get information straight from the source, since you know that it will be accurate and up to date. However, the downside is that these practice tests are in a PDF format rather than online, and they don’t provide you with an automatic diagnostic report to see which areas you need to work on.

Mometrix

Mometrix offers a study guide that does a solid job as well. However, it is only available as a printed book or ebook, making it less convenient to study the material. If you prefer the traditional textbook format, then this guide may be right for you, but many test takers find online study guides to be more useful.
